Izumi is a member of the high-jump team in Osaka High. Widely considered to be a star in the high school sporting scene, he even has a fan all the way in the US: Mizuki Ashiya. Mizuki then decided to make a controversial decision: She transferred herself to Osaka High just to get near to Izumi. There was a big problem, for Osaka High is an all-boys school.

As fate would have it, Izumi was the first person Mizuki bumped into on her first day in Osaka. To complicate matters, the pair turned out to be classmates and roommates. Mizuki herself was elated at this turn of events, although she worried that Izumi, her idol, would find out about her true gender.

While Mizuki was playing soccer with Shuichi Nakatsu, she was accidentally knocked unconscious by Shuichi. When Izumi took the initiative to cradle the girl to the school doctor, he accidentally felt her chest as he was carrying her to the nurse's office (This was only revealed towards the end of the series, although the reader is aware that Izumi knew Mizuki's true identity). After the incident, the high-jumper took it upon himself to look after Mizuki, and help hide her identity. Meanwhile, Mizuki remains unaware that her secret's already known to Izumi.

On top of keeping Mizuki's identity a secret, Izumi has to suppress his own feelings for the girl. To make matters worse, Shuichi too fell in love with Mizuki, and later challenged Izumi, asking if he has feelings for Mizuki. Izumi successfully evaded the question, without revealing that Mizuki's really a girl.

While attending Sekime and Rei's wedding in Japan, he proposes to Mizuki and she accepted it.

Mizuki Ashiya, who is Japanese, but moved to America when she was young, is the heroine of the story. She spontaneously moved from California to Japan and enrolled into an all boys school (Osaka Gakuen) because her idol, Sano Izumi, who’s a top high jumper and the same age as her, attends the school. To look like a boy, she keeps her hair short and ruffled and wears a tight demin vest to hide her chest. In many ways, it’s good that she has a pretty flat chest, but she wants more cleavage between them. She’s a very fast runner (due to her mother’s athleticism), but is very clumsy at times (due to her father’s clumsiness). Mizuki loves all kinds of food, especially sweet things, which is a strong contrast to Izumi's dislike of them. Also, she can be quite stingy when it comes to sharing her food. She’s also a lover of animals, as we can see when she’s with Yujirou, Sano’s dog.

While in Japan, she lives in the same dorm room as Sano. There, she meets Shuichi Nakatsu, a talented soccer player who becomes her friend and later falls in love with her feminine side, leading him to think that he is gay. Other friends of hers are Senri Nakao, a "cute" boy (bishounen) with a crush on the dorm leader, Minami Nanba, Sekime and Noe, two girl-obsessed, but good-hearted boys, Kayashima, a yoga-practicing boy with extra-sensory perception who can see ghosts and spirits, and Hokuto Umeda, the homosexual school doctor who helps her out. He knows that Mizuki is a girl but he helps her out on her love problems as well.

Even though Mizuki puts forth much effort to hide her female identity, Dr. Umeda and Sano separately discover her secret soon after she begins attending Osaka Gakuen. However, neither report her; Dr. Umeda judges her reasons as acceptable, and Sano conceals his knowledge for the sake of keeping Mizuki at the school. Although Nakatsu never gains the knowledge that Mizuki is female until the secret's out in the open, he perceives her femininity and becomes attracted to her, instead thinking that he himself is gay.

However, towards the end of her second year (and the series), the three student heads of the dormitories found out about her true identity. Although they tried to suppress the news themselves, in the end, Mizuki decided to leave Osaka. All was not lost though; during their university days, Sano finally proposed to her, and she accepted it ^^'

Shuichi is a classmate of Izumi Sano and Mizuki Ashiya, and the trio frequently gets together to participate in Osaka High's activities. They also hang around with the rest of their group. Being a loud and brash boy, Shuichi offers a contrast to the stoic Izumi. This contrast is deliberate, for he soon develops feelings for Mizuki. However, he thought that she's a guy, due to her disguise, and so thought that he was gay himself.

Like Izumi, Shuichi is an athlete. He is a member of the soccer team. His career was once under threat when he was falsely accused of cheating during an exam. Luckily, with the help of the three dorm leaders, he managed to clear his name.

Although that was the case, usually, he is on rather poor terms with Minami Nanba, the student leader in charge of his dorm. Minami would frequently tell him to shut up during dorm meetings. Also, he is often kicked in the head by Hokuto Umeda, the school doctor who happens to be Minami's uncle.

Hailing from the city of Osaka, Shuichi speaks with a distinct Kansai accent, which adds to his reputation as a joker. On top of that, he's often seen as a glutton among his group of friends, although Mizuki sometimes joins him in ordering big portions of food.

NAKATSU X ASHIYA X SANO

Mizuki becomes obssessed with Japan's teenage high jumping star Izumi Sano after seeing his amazing high jump on her television set. Mizuki desperately wants to meet her idol and tell him how much he inspired her, and befriend him along the way. In order to do so, she convinces her parents to allow her to transfer to a boarding school in Japan. The only problem is that it is an all-boys school.

Things get complicated from the first day of school. Sano mistakens Mizuki for a homosexual after her embarrassing inspirational friendship speech in front of the entire class. That is until half way through the day, he secretly discovers Mizuki's disguise. Nakatsu, a classmate of Mizuki and Sano, comes into the picture by falling in love with our Mizuki. Initially, he has a hard time accepting his feelings, but eventually embraces his love for Mizuki unshamelessly. All Mizuki wants is to encourage Sano back into high jump, and his attention on her. She couldn't help but fall in love with Sano, unknowing that Sano knows her secret and has developed feelings for her. A girl like Mizuki can only do so much.
